Grants
“From a farm in Kiev my grandparents came, fleeing evil, seeking peace, carrying candlesticks. Now I continue the story, raising Jewish sons, safeguarding the future of Israel and my community. Each of us has the power to alter the course of history by what we do.” – Vicki Kaufman, Endowment Book of Life
DONORS SUPPORT CAUSES NEAR AND FAR

Every year the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona distributes millions of dollars to worthy causes and organizations personally selected by our donors. In the past the five years, more than $22 million has flowed to more than 300 not-for-profit organizations – local and national, Jewish and secular.

Many individuals and families set up donor-advised funds to manage their current philanthropic giving. They specify which local organizations they want to support, along with their alma maters, the arts, medical research or other causes important to them. Others establish family foundations. In these cases, funds flow into the community with little or no public recognition.

Donors also establish legacy plans to provide permanent support into the future, specifying their personal choices – which may be any combination of organizations, areas of interest and unrestricted funds. Some endowment funds are distributed as grants that meet the criteria established by the donor.

Current grants are awarded from endowments that are already funded, occasionally during the donor’s lifetime, but most typically after death. We now manage several funded endowments that detail specific causes as well as those that include funds to be distributed where the need is greatest.

The Grants Deliberation Committee of lay leaders reviews applications and awards grants that match the donor’s vision. These grants are publicly announced, so become the most visible sign of our donors’ impact here in Tucson and around the world.

Feeding the Homeless in Israel
The Table-to-Table project gathers food to share with homeless African refugees and veteran Israelis in a park in south Tel Aviv. Shopkeepers in the area have said that since the volunteers started feeding people, the level of robberies from shops has dropped dramatically.

Your Causes
  • A physician was thrilled to learn he could donate a piece of undeveloped land and designate the theatre, symphony, his synagogue and the Foundation’s grants program as his beneficiaries. He never imagined he could be a philanthropist.
  • One donor wrote, “May this modest bequest someday open for a child a path that would have remained closed but for a little help from his or her community.”
  • Another wrote, “Because I was able to escape Nazi Germany in 1938, I want to provide help to other Jews in countries where they are persecuted and assist them in emigrating and settling in the United States.”
